Honda is looking for innovators in India who are passionate about cars and dabble in technologies like voice, AI, ML, Connected etc. to help create dream products a reality and usher the automobile industry into the next era.

Honda brings to you “Honda hackathon”, with the vision to bring revolution in the area of voice to enhance customer experience ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ the car. The participants are afforded an opportunity to work upon a unique theme and problem statement to come up with innovative ideas and working prototypes.

Voice Based Services on Connected Car Platform:

Honda is looking to generate innovative ideas and working prototypes on voice-based experiences to enhance their existing connected platform.

How can Honda provide Voice-Based Service “In-Car” or “Outside the Car” to its customers by leveraging Connected, IoT, AI, ML, etc. technologies?

All the teams shortlisted for the prototype phase will be given access to Connected Platform Data Sets that contain data points generated by Honda cars such as location, latitude & longitude, odometer reading, speed data, etc.

Rules of Honda Hackathon 2020:

  • This is a team participation hackathon. You need to have at least 2 members in your team can have at most 4 members in your team.
  • You can either invite your friends to form a team or you can request other teams to add you as a member.
  • The ideation phase of the hackathon will begin on Nov 20 2020 at 9:00 PM IST and will end on Dec 12 2020 at 11:55 PM IST. The prototype phase of the hackathon will start on Dec 17, 2020 at 06:00 PM IST and end on Dec 21, 2020 at 11:55 PM IST.
  • It’s an online hackathon, you can participate from anywhere.
  • The theme of the hackathon is Voice-Based Services on Connected Car Platform. You must submit a solution that is in line with this theme.
  • Once the hackathon starts, you will get an option to submit multiple ideas, you can submit as many ideas as you want. Should multiple ideas of yours get shortlisted, you will be allowed to take only one forward for the prototype phase. In the prototype phase, you will have the option to submit your project. You can update your submission as many times as you like, however, your final submission will be considered for evaluation.
  • You are expected to come up with new and innovative ideas, any idea that has been copied from somewhere will be disqualified.
  • You may use open source libraries and other freely available systems/services such as Google Maps, Facebook Connect, Twitter feeds, etc.
  • All the teams shortlisted for the prototype phase will be given access to Connected Platform Data Sets that contain data points generated by Honda cars such as location, latitude & longitude, odometer reading, speed data, etc. Click here to view the data points that will be made available to shortlisted teams.
  • The developer/developers from teams that have been awarded prizes in the prototype phase will have to transfer the IP of the products that they have built to Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL).

  • By participating in the hackathon, you agree to the terms and conditions of HackerEarth and this hackathon.

Terms and Condition of Honda Hackathon 2020:

These Intellectual Property Terms and Conditions (“Terms and Conditions”) constitute a legally binding contract and apply to teams and participants who have registered (“Participants”), the solutions developed and submitted as entries, and the access to all materials, ideas, prototypes, documentations, data, content or code provided in connection with or as part of the Hackathon to be held from 5th Oct to 31st Mar’21 (“the Hackathon”) by Honda Cars India Limited. (“Company”).

  1. By registering for the Hackathon or submitting an idea or solution for consideration in the challenge, Participants and their teams acknowledge and agree:
    1. To abide by the Terms and Conditions and any other guidelines provided by the representatives of the Company in connection with the Hackathon
    1. To be bound by the decisions of the Company and its representatives in connection with the Hackathon, whose decisions are final and binding.
  2. Hackathon Solution Guidelines:
    1. To be fully considered, ideas and solutions/prototypes developed and submitted by the Participants as an entry in connection to the Hackathon (“Entry”) must:
      1. be developed by Participants who submit the Entry;
      1. be original, solely developed as part of the Hackathon and not developed in the course of employment for a third party;
      1. not contain any content that violates or infringes any third party’s rights including but not limited to their Intellectual Property rights (as defined herein);
      1. be in accordance with the Terms and Conditions and in response to the Hackathon problem statement as provided by the Company;
      1. not contain any third party’s confidential information;
      1. not contain any third party software, other than open source software or any other free to use content;
      1. not have already been submitted in connection with any other application process, competition or request for funding, or otherwise disclosed to any third parties;
      1. not contain any hack which causes damage to any third party which includes but is not limited to deploying computer viruses of any kind;
      1. not contain any inappropriate, offensive or malicious code or material.
    1. Any materials submitted as part of an Entry will become the property of the Company and the Company will not have any obligation to return such materials to the Participants and their teams.
    1. In consideration for the opportunity to work on the Hackathon problem statement, the development of experience and expertise and the access to the Company’s resources, ideas and materials that will be provided in the course of the Hackathon, the Participants hereby undertake to be bound by the covenants of the Participation Agreement.
  3. Non-Disclosure:
    1. For the purposes of the Terms and Conditions, materials and information belonging to or in possession of, or shared by the Company that is not known to the public and that derives its value from not being known to the public, whether or not the Company and its affiliates consider to be confidential, which include but are not limited to, all information, technical data, or know-how provided as part of the Hackathon relating to research, products, software, services, development, concepts, ideas, inventions, processes, designs, drawings, models, prototypes, business strategies, or business expansion plans, shall be considered as confidential information, whether conveyed in written, graphic, physical or oral form (“Confidential Information”). Participants hereby agree to hold in confidence and shall preserve the confidentiality of Confidential Information and to return to the Company all such Confidential Information at the conclusion of the Hackathon and further agree not to retain any copies of the same.
  4. Intellectual Property Rights:
    1. For the purposes of the Terms and Conditions, the term “Intellectual Property” shall include, without limitation, any inventions, technological innovations, discoveries, designs, formulas, know-how, procedures and processes, business methods, prototypes, patents and industrial property, trademark, trade name, trade secrets, service marks, copyrights, computer software, ideas, creations, writings, illustrations, scientific and mathematical models, programs with source code, algorithms, application programming interfaces, compositions and structures, concepts, diagrams, documentations, data analysis methods, models, other intellectual and proprietary rights of every kind and nature throughout the world whether arising by operation of law, by contract or by license or otherwise and the improvements to all such property, and all recorded material defining, describing, or illustrating all such property, whether in hard copy or electronic form.
    1. Participants agree that the Company and its affiliates exclusively own and shall retain all worldwide rights, title, and interest in and to the Company’s materials, Confidential Information and Intellectual Property as defined above (collectively referred to as “Company’s Intellectual Property”). No title or ownership of the Company’s Intellectual Property is granted (express or implied) or otherwise transferred to any of the Participants or any other entity or persons under the Terms and Conditions.
    1. Participants shall not use in whole or in part the Entry submitted by them as a submission for any other competitive events, including but not limited to Hackathons organized by third parties, request for funding, or otherwise disclose their Entry to any third parties.
    1. Participants shall assist and cooperate with the Company in all respects to execute documents, and will take such further action as reasonably requested by the Company to enable it to acquire, transfer, maintain, perfect and enforce its rights including those relating to Intellectual Property and other legal protections for their Entry.
    1. Participants will be awarded a prize for their Entry (Only Top 10 Winning Teams. Winner- INR 1.5 Lacs, 1st Runner Up- INR 75000, 2nd Runner Up- INR 50000 & Other 7 Teams of Top 10 teams with Amazon vouchers/cash rewards of INR 10000 each. TDS will be deducted as per government norms from the prize money. The winners can claim it through the TDS certificate that will be provided) and the Participants of these teams shall irrevocably assign and transfer to the Company, absolutely with full title guarantee, all rights, title and interest in and to the Intellectual Property rights relating to or arising out of their Entry. The Company shall have all rights, including but not limited to, copy, edit, publicly display, broadcast, publish, implement and use, in whole or in part, their Entry, in any manner during and after the Hackathon.
    1. Winning Participants hereby agree not to instigate, support, maintain, or authorize any action, claim or lawsuit, against the Company or any other person, on the grounds that use of their Entry infringes any of the Winning Participant’s rights as creator of the Entry, including but not limited to the rights relating to Intellectual Property of their Entry.
    1. Each Participant acknowledges and agrees that the Company or other Participants or third parties may have developed or commissioned works which are similar to the Entry of the Winning Participant or may develop something similar in the future, and each Participant waives any claim they may have resulting from any similarities to their Entry.
  5. Nature of the Terms and Conditions:
    1. Nothing herein shall constitute an employment or joint venture, or partnership relationship between the Participants and the Company.
  6. Indemnity:
    1. Participants agree to release, indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Company and their parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees, organizer and agents, from / against any and all actions, claims, third party injuries, losses, damages and expenses, and/or liabilities of any nature whatsoever arising in any way from participation in the Hackathon or acceptance or use of prize or part thereof, including but not limited to any claim of infringement of Intellectual Property rights of any third party, dispute among team members, defamation, rights of privacy, personal injury resulting from fault, negligence, or wrongful action of the Participant.
    1. Neither party shall be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages arising out of the performance or failure to perform under these Terms and Conditions, whether or not caused by the acts or omissions or negligence (including gross negligence or willful misconduct).
  7. Acknowledgement of Understanding:
    1. Participants acknowledge to have read the above Terms and Conditions and accept freely and voluntarily the terms included herein which are in addition to the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service accepted by the Participant at the time of registration for the Hackathon.
  8. Governing law, jurisdiction and arbitration:
    1. All disputes and differences arising between the Participants and the Company in connection with or arising out of the contract or the execution of the works shall be resolved through the process of arbitration. The arbitration shall be conducted in accordance with the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 as amended from time to time. Both the Participants and the Company shall mutually appoint one arbitrator. The decision of the sole arbitrator shall be final and binding on both the Participants and the Company s. The award shall be a speaking award giving reasons for allowance/rejection of the claims of the Participants and the Company. The venue of arbitration shall be at New Delhi only and the language of arbitration proceedings shall be English. The courts of New Delhi alone shall have the exclusive jurisdiction in the matter.
  9. Anti-Bribery:
    1. Participants shall comply with all applicable laws, regulations and standards of all jurisdictions applicable to its performance under this Agreement. Specifically, they will refrain from activities and have procedures in place to prevent activities that are illegal, unethical or which might bring either party or the products or the Services into disrepute, or which might constitute or represent a serious conflict of interest, or which might give the appearance of impropriety. This includes all applicable domestic and international: anti-corruption laws and regulations prohibiting the payment of commercial or private bribes, including without limitation, the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1998 including the amendments thereto, from time to time, which prohibits corrupt offers, directly or indirectly, to a government official (including any government employee or candidate for public office, or any employee of a government-owned or government-controlled company, public international organization, or political party) to secure any improper commercial advantage. The Participants shall not make any payment to induce officials to perform routine functions they are otherwise obligated to perform, also known as “facilitating payments.” Furthermore, the Participants shall refrain from making any payment to any person in a manner which would constitute or have the purpose or effect of public or commercial bribery, or the acceptance of or acquiescence in extortion, kickbacks, or other unlawful or improper means of obtaining business or any improper advantage.

  1. Do I need to pay any money to register for the Hackathon? No. You do not have to pay anything to anyone to register yourself for any Hackathon on HackerEarth.
  2. Do I need to have any specific qualifications to be a participant for the Hackathon? If you love to code, you are more than welcome to participate in the Hackathon.
  3. How do I submit what I have made for the Hackathon? You have to develop the application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.
  4. Do we need to have the entire idea fully working? The entire idea need not be fully implemented however, the submission should be functional so that it can be reviewed by the judges.
  5. How is the environment? Will your environment support any language? Will you provide any IDE and DB for us to work on ideas? You have to develop the entire software application on your local system and submit it on HackerEarth in tar/zip file format along with instructions to run the application and source code.
  6.   7. Does one have to be online and available for the entire duration of the Hackathon? No, one does not need to be logged in on HackerEarth or be online for the entire duration. You can develop the application on your local system based on the given themes and then submit it on HackerEarth, on the specific challenge page.
  8. Since there is no specific technology mentioned, are there any restrictions on using number of pre-built libraries? There is no restriction to use any language, technology stack, or libraries. You can use any of them to create the web/mobile application.
  9. Do I need to give a demo for the product that I have built? Yes, you will need to submit a small presentation or video that demos your submission. In case you are one of the winners, you might be invited to demo your application at a physical event, details of which will be shared with sufficient advance notice.
  10. A fully developed application need to have a solid backend for data storage like SQL, SharePoint etc. since its online, is it accepted to show only the proto type of it? Yes it’s absolutely fine to submit just the prototype. If you use any database like MySQL or PostgresSQL you can also submit a database dump along with your submission. However you are allowed to submit just the prototype.
  11. If it is a team submission, does that mean all team members will have access to work at the same time? Yes, all team members can login from their account and do application submission on HackerEarth.
  12. Who will own the IP(Intellectual Property) Rights to the product that I have built? The developer/developers from teams that have been awarded prizes in the prototype phase will have to transfer the IP of the products that they have built to Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL).
